Dr. Courtney Smith-Orr, Teaching Assistant Professor of ECE, was selected as one of 20 inspiring women to win Wiley's 2021 Hall of Femme Award. These awards "highlight women who are making a difference in STEM education and beyond".
Dr. Smith-Orr states "As an engineering professor, my goal is to make my classroom a safe space for students to (a) see their ability to become the engineers they dreamed of becoming, and (b) begin the process of sharing their identity, creativity, and enthusiasm for learning with the future engineering community." Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Smith-Orr has successfully introduced different active learning techniques for her courses in ECE. She has inspired her colleagues to adopt this approach and also designed and developed an active learning classroom in the ECE Department.
Dr. Smith-Orr advices women entering STEM careers to find multiple mentors that meet the multifacted requirements for support, guidance, sponsorship, and understanding for the students' current and future identities.
