Welcome

Dear Friends:

Greetings from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UNC Charlotte. Despite the challenges of recent times, ECE faculty and students continued to be highly productive in their endeavors this year. I am excited to share the Fall 2021 Newsletter that highlights some of their recent success stories.

This fall we concluded making several modifications to degree programs in ECE. We are excited to welcome our first cohort of students in the new Master of Science in Computer Engineering program. The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering was restructured for better planning for progression in specific technical areas of focus within electrical engineering. We also enrolled the first undergraduate students in the new Machine Learning concentrations in the Bachelors programs in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. We hope the new additions and modifications will serve our students better and lead them to greater success in careers in electrical and computer engineering.

ECE faculty, including those associated with EPIC, achieved admirable success in sponsored research in the last fiscal year, securing over $5M of new research awards secured from July 2020 – June 2021. There were several exciting new success stories in the current fiscal year as well involving new research projects on machine learning, wireless power transfer, cyber-physical systems, control systems, solar cells, and resilience of the smart grid. ECE faculty play leading roles in many of UNC Charlotte’s newly identified areas of research focus and distinction, including smart and sustainable cities, transformational energy, optics and optoelectronics, nanoscale science and materials, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, transportation and advanced mobility, and climate and resilience. Some of these emerging areas are included in this newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading them.

I wish you all a joyous Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year!

Kind regards
