IEEE PES Student Scholarship

Emily A. Abbate, a student in the MSEE program in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is a winner of the 2022 IEEE Power & Energy Society Outstanding Student Scholarship. The prestigious $10,000 scholarship celebrates and honors students around the world based on academic achievements, contributions to meeting community and humanitarian needs, and leadership in advancing student engagement within the Power & Energy Society (PES).

Emily, a resident of Concord, NC, earned her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with the Power and Energy Concentration in 2021 with Summa Cum Laude distinction. She continued her studies as a Master’s student in ECE focusing on power and energy systems. Her Master’s thesis entitled “Applying Energy Justice to Resiliency Studies in Power Systems” discusses the intersection of socioeconomics and power outages during extreme storms. Emily was named the Duke Energy Distinguished EPIC scholar and won several awards from the ECE Department including the Benjamin A. Hood Service award and the Outstanding Student Leadership award for her contributions to that program.
